The workshop dubbed the Cape Coast Harmattan School took place from the 27th February to 11th March, 2016 at the University of Cape Coast. The Harmattan School had a fourfold objective. These were, providing an exploratory platform for PhD candidates and young academics, enhancing the ability of young academics to include gender-sensitive approaches and feminist analytical tools in their research, providing young academics with relevant theoretical knowledge on the gender interrelations of macro and micro-level land policies and local livelihoods, as well as deepening their understanding of legal pluralism and women’s land rights.

The context of the workshop was organised around three themes. The first was framing the analytical contexts within which topics such as social gender relations and intersectionality, feminist’ epistemology and the foundations of gender sensitive research methodologies were discussed.  Second was on subject matter of Gender and land rights in Africa where Global trends in land acquisition policy and the macro-economy of land politics in Africa were discussed. The third was research methodology, data gathering and analysis and software use. Significant aspects of the school were the field trip and mentorship sessions that gave the participants the opportunity to present their work for review by assigned mentors and their peers.
